A New, Bold Approach to an Old, Classic Play

The mainintent for this project was to design a poster for the Ottawa Little Theatre with an original, story-based design. Targeted at all Shakespeare and theatre lovers, this poster takes a new approach to promoting this play. Sketching from Start to Finish

While design this theatre poster, it was very important to showcase a scene in the play that doesn’t normally get viewed. The initial sketches focused more on words that were said throughout the play. While the refined sketches changed to what some of the scenes may look like. Alternating between improving the design and consulting with the client, we determined which of the concepts to flesh out and move forward with. A lot of time was put into the illustration and title onthe poster to really make it feel like a set you would see in the play.

Using the Script for Inspiration

The final design delivers a striking, prominent, story-based theatre poster, easily recognizable at any size. The client was thrilled with the end result, noting that they loved the idea of focusing on the three caskets, and that they really like the way the entire illustration came together in the end. Looking back, spending more time on the type of placement would definitely improve the overall appearance.
